Pershore 4 - 0 Yardley
The final game of this intriguing Bodykraft league season saw Pershore host Yardley.
Pershore began the stronger of the teams, maintaining good possession and forcing a string of fine saves from the visiting captain and keeper. Yardley however did present a threat with some skilled running by their forwards, but this was dealt with manfully by the first team's man of the season Dave Hindle. Despite significant Pershore pressure the first half finished goalless.
The second half continued in similar vein with Pershore creating many chances only to be foiled by some excellent goalkeeping. Pershore's first goal came from a short corner, a well worked routine saw Gareth Rushton tap in at the far post. The second goal followed quickly afterwards via the fleet footed Harry Jones who scored a sublime reverse stick lob from the narrowest of angles. The third goal was scored by right back Russell Scudamore running strongly with the ball from the halfway line , some great skill and good fortune allowed him to slot the ball under the goalkeeper. The fourth goal was created by some good interplay in the Pershore team, Steve Ridsdale drew the keeper to allow Joe Taylor to convert at the far post. With all four goals coming in little over five minutes, the rest of the game was goalless.
Although Pershore will be disappointed with not pushing the teams above them closer for promotion a fourth place finish represents an fair return, and they look forward to new challenges next season.
Bloxwich II 4 - 7 Pershore II
Pershore’s second string finished the season in style following this goal frenzy in Bloxwich. Playing some of their best hockey of the season, Pershore stormed to a four nil lead within the opening 20 minutes of the game. Bloxwich simply couldn’t cope with Pershore’s fine interplay. Ali Sanderson scored a first half hatrick, with Liam Ridings also getting on the score sheet.
Playing with extreme confidence, Pershore marauded forwards, and were unlucky not to score more goals in the first half. Winger Steve Quantrell was having a storming game, causing chaos in Bloxwich’s defence. Bloxwich however scored a goal in the dying seconds of the half past the unlucky Wickerham in goal - giving them some hope of a comeback.
Although the half time score line was comfortable, Pershore knew that Bloxwich would come roaring out in the second half. Pershore started lethargically, and to their horror, Bloxwich scored twice in a frenzied opening 5 minutes of the half. Indeed, things could have been worse if skipper Scott Attwood wasn’t on hand to calmly clear another goal bound shot. Pershore finally responded to the onslaught, with Mike Handley providing some much needed re-assurance at the back. Mark Passmore went on a mazy dribble, and cooly finished with a reverse stick shot. Again this should have settled Pershore’s nerves, but Bloxwich came back and scored again following a defensive mistake. With James Massingham and Rob Handley finally getting to grips with Bloxwich's star player, Pershore looked more composed. Mark Passmore soon added his second of the game, and then a flowing move down the left between Andy Wright and Vince Crowley, saw Ali Sanderson slam home his fourth of the game.
All in all, this was a great result for Pershore, who consolidated a fine fourth position in the league.
Streetly III 2 – 1 Pershore III
The final game of the season was probably the best performance of the year by Pershore against an already promoted Streetly side. Pershore created a number of chances with excellent passing moves. Graham Handley and Matt Griffin were able to combine to create a number of chances and throughout the game tested the excellent Streetly goalkeeper. Streetly came more and more into the game and marshalled by Toby Whiting in the Pershore goal Pershore remained disciplined. Streetly did take the lead when a shot that was going wide was dragged back into the goal by a deft touch by the Streetly forward wrong footing Whiting. Pershore stormed forward Gary Stevenson and Gavin Pugh combined with player of the season Julian Heath to create further chances and it was from one of these chances that Andy Griffin was able to score at the second time of asking. It is a shame for Pershore that Andy has just found his goal scoring boots at the end of the season.
The second half was an advert by both teams how hockey should be played, both teams passed the ball around and tackled hard but fair. Karl Lawson and Ed Barker were both on the top of their game and aided by ever present Pete Moreby kept the Streetly team at bay. Streetly had now started to dominate the game with there extra players able to maintain a higher tempo and with 2 minutes to go they were able score after another little touch in front of Whiting diverted the ball home. Pershore deserved something from the game but like the rest of the season it was the lack of a finisher and the lack of quality on there short corners that denied them a point.
